Adriana Ieraci
Co-founder and CEO of Elaya
Introduce yourself and your profession?
I’m Adriana Ieraci, co-founder and CEO of Elaya. I’m a maker, a technologist  and a researcher. Elaya is building technology to improve delivery of physical therapy in the ICU.  This work has brought me back to my roots as an engineer. I have most enjoyed bringing together this interdisciplinary team of technologists, clinicians and researchers to solve healthcare challenges.  I am an adjunct lecturer in entrepreneurship and human-centred design at the University of Toronto. I am currently working on a PhD in AI and I started the GYBO Robotics Network, a knowledge sharing community of over 850 roboticists and enthusiasts.
What does exceptional leadership look like to you?
I am impressed by leaders that can both inspire and mobilize their team. They are able to articulate a clear and meaningful vision and then translate that into collective action. I believe startups require an exceptional form of this leadership because they need to compensate for lack of financial or reputation incentives.  This type of leader has to have  empathy to understand their people and what motivates them, while still  keeping the bigger picture in view. 
What's one podcast or book you’re learning from right now?
I am reading Tony Fadell’s book “Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making”. Tony is known for some of the most desired products ever released including the iPod, the iPhone and the Nest. I use and love these products and I want Elaya’s products  to be that impactful. Tony shares his experience creating bold ambitious products by starting with and continually returning to “why” and I am learning a lot from how he thinks about and approaches design.
What was the biggest win of your career?
I have had many memorable moments in my career but some of the most rewarding have been while mentoring or teaching. I love to hear from former students, and I especially love to hear from the women who have taken my classes who have gone on to start new ventures. It’s always energizing  to hear their ideas and how they have applied  and evolved what we discussed.  I hope that having a woman introduce them to entrepreneurship opened the door to a new possible path to pursue.

Introduce yourself and your profession?
My name is Aurora, I enjoy reading books (especially sci-fi), breakfast is my favorite meal, and I spend most of my free time working on crafts/music related things. ‍My profession is in materials science with a focus on research and development.
What has a career working in the tech industry taught you about yourself, and the industry in general?
Working in the tech industry has taught me that I enjoy big challenges, that I like working with like minded people and that there is always room for learning new things and improving them.‍It has also taught me that in this industry there is no such thing as an absolute expert and that behind every big success, there is always a group of people, not a single individual.
What are some misconceptions about the tech industry?
That people are not willing to help each other. I have found that the more a person shows genuine interest in a subject or someone's work, the more willing other people are to share their knowledge and experience with them. I’m sure this isn’t always the case, but this has been my experience.
What's one podcast or book you’re learning from right now?
I just finished reading Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty. I have been trying to learn more about mindfulness and found the book to be helpful to understand the concept better and put some of it to practice.

Introduce yourself and your profession?
My name is Nicole Verkindt. I am a tech entrepreneur and angel investor. I have recently taken over an ultra fast logistics business called Buggy. I am proud that I was one of the early investors in Sheertex!
In your personal opinion, what could work toward decreasing the gender gap within the tech industry?
We need women in leadership roles to decrease the gender gaps throughout organizations. To increase women in leadership in tech - it's pretty straight forward in my opinion - they need funding and sales. So any programs focused on investing in women led businesses or sourcing from them, I believe, will move the needle the most.

What's one podcast or book you’re learning from right now?
I've become very personally interested in Siddhartha Mukherjee's writings - his most recent book the Song of the Cell talks about the future of cell therapy. I've been really excited about what's to comein the biology space, I think its the equivalent of the computing revolution and only just getting started.
